Visual Basic .Net provides full support for creating multithreaded applications. Multithreading enables an application to contain one or more threads that can share the workload in an application by executing one at a time.

Structured Exception Handling
Exceptions are the errors that are generated at runtime as a result of an erroneous statement or condition or because of some unexpected behavior of the application. For the program to be able to handle such exceptions Visual Basic .Net supports structured exception handling that consists of protected blocks of code and filters for the possible exceptions that can be raised by the program.

Overloading
Multiple methods can be created with the same name in a class provided their parameter list is different.

Constructors and Destructors
- A Constructor is a special type of method that is invoked when you create a new instance of a Class.
- A constructor is used to initialize the members of the class.
- A destructor is invoked when an object is destroyed.
- A destructor releases the resources used by an object.

Inheritance
Inheritance is the ability of a class to derive it’s characteristics from an existing class.
Visual Basic .Net provides the Inherits keyword to implement inheritance as shown below.
Class Derived class
Inherits ParentClass

Visual basic .Net
Visual Basic .Net is one of the languages that are directed towards meeting the objectives of the .Net initiative of creating distributed applications. It has inherited the capability of rapid application development. It has strengthened its Object Oriented features as compared to its earlier version. It has features such as abstraction, encapsulation, inheritance & polymorphism.
Features of Visual Basic .Net
Some of the key features introduced in Visual Basic .Net are as follows:

XML (Extensible Markup Language)
- XML (Extensible Markup Language) is a set of rules for encoding documents in machine-readable form.XML is a markup language;
- It stores data in a structured format with the help of tags. Extensible means you can extend your ability to describe a document by defining meaningful tags for your application. For Example you can use
tag to store customer code. - XML is hardware and software independent markup language. XML stores data in the format that can be interpreted by any other computer language. Therefore XML data can be transferred across any H/W & S/W platform.

Components of .Net Framework
The .Net Framework consists of
1. Web Forms
2. Windows Forms
3. Console Applications.
In addition to these three .Net Framework consists of two other components
1. The .Net Framework Base Classes
2. Common Language Runtime(CLR).

The .Net Framework
- It is the foundation on which you can design, develop and deploy applications. This platform make simplified programming model while building robust applications.
- The .Net infrastructure is the technology that helps in creating and running robust, scalable and distributed applications.
- The core of the .net infrastructure is the .Net framework, which is a collection of services and classes. The .Net is a layer between .Net applications and O.S.
- In other words the .Net Framework encapsulates much of the basic functionality that was earlier built into various programming languages such as debugging and security services.

.Net Services
- .Net delivers software as web services. Therefore user can subscribe to a web service and use it regardless of H/W & S/W. platform.
- .Net offers services to access data by linking calendars, phonebooks, address-books, personal references to the passport authentication services.
- In addition to the web services provided by Microsoft third party services and products can be easily integrated with the .Net environment.
- Web services provide functionality that can be accessed by the application by using internet standard like HTTP & XML. Therefore web services are platform independent.
WHAT IS .NET?
- Microsoft has developed .net (Dot net) platform to bridge the gap in interoperability between various applications. It integrates various programming languages & Services.
- It is designed to make significant improvements in code reuse, resource management, multi-language development, security, deployment and administration.
- The .net offers complete suite for designing, developing and deployment of applications.
- This suite consists of .net products, .net services & .net Framework.
